What is ISDN?

Short for Integrated Service Digital Network is a circuit-switched telephone network system that allows both voice and data services to be delivered over digital lines simultaneously.

It was launched in 1986 as a means to migrate outdated landline technology to digital.

What does the ISDN switch-off mean?

Like all commercial decisions, the ISDN switch off is driven by costs and profits.

The switch off is being carried out in two stages. The first stage, which is now in effect as of 2020, means ISDN customers can no longer order new connections or make amendments to their current service.

The second and final stage will take place in 2025, when the ISDN network will completely switched off. Though 2025 seems far away, from now onwards, ISDN reliant organisations will see their communications suffer - in ways which we'll cover in this blog.

The dangers of ignoring the ISDN switch-off!

  • Unreliable Service - The lack of investment and resource being directed to the ISDN infrastructure means organisations could start to notice the quality of their calls dwindle and any issues that may arise with your service cannot be resolved quickly by less ISDN-trained engineers, resulting in a less efficient and reliable service.
  • Restricted Scalability - ISDN customers cannot add new lines or amend their current service. So, if the organisation grows or streamlines between now and 2025 and they'll need to expand or scale back telecommunications service, unfortunately they'll be stuck.
  • Cost-Ineffective - ISDN systems are outdated and now require an untenable amount of maintenance and cost to run.
